Red Dog Saloon pays tribute to the Hipsters of the High West
August 17th & 18th
Our tribute to the beatnik's that molded the music of the 1960's at the Red Dog Saloon.

On August 17th and 18th the Red Dog Saloon is holding a music series "Hipsters of the High West", our tribute to the beatnik's that molded the music of the 1960's at the Red Dog Saloon. The venue that introduced the world to psychedelic guitar band rock and roll, the Red Dog Saloon, at 76 North C Street in Virginia City, Nevada will be hosting a series of shows featuring Moonalice, Nick Gravenites, and David & Linda LaFlamme performing the music of It's A Beautiful Day. "Hipsters" came to Virginia City in 1964 and refurbished the historic Comstock House with the idea of bringing back the western dance hall. It attracted its Performers and audience from San Francisco who enjoyed the music and freedom the town had to offer. These Haight-Ashbury district residents brought with them the Victorian period dress that became synonymous with "Hippie" attire and a revolution in music that influences the world to this day. The show begins Friday the 17th at 8pm with Nick Gravenites. Nick grew up on the southside of Chicago hanging out in the mid-50's with a coterie of misfit white kids - Elvin Bishop, Paul Butterfield, Michael Bloomfield - who went on to form that protean powerhouse of watershed white blues, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. In addition to authoring the classic "Born In Chicago" and "East West" for Butterfield, Gravenites scribed hits for Janis Joplin, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Michael Bloomfield, Electric Flag, Pure Prairie League, Tracy Nelson, Roy Buchanan, Jimmy Witherspoon, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, and James Cotton. He has appeared on some 40 albums as singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. For more info for Nick go to http://www.nickgravenites.com/ Saturday the 18th at 5pm David & Linda LaFlamme performing the music of It's A Beautiful Day will hit the stage. Famous for their song "White Bird", a melancholy ballad that stood out not only for its memorable vocal melody and "seize the day" message, but also for front man David Laflamme's slow-burning violin solo. Multiple albums were laced with classic cuts such as "Hot Summer Day", "Bombay Calling," "Girl With No Eyes", "Wasted Union Blues", "Time Is", "Dolphins", "Misery Loves Company", and many more you'll remember. Today the band performs the music of It's A Beautiful Day along with newer material, moving effortlessly from an almost folksy sound to ethereal jazz to psychedelic to straight on rock & roll performing selections from three new CDs and over seven of their previous albums. The show is enhanced with David Laflamme's delightful reminiscing of the San Francisco Summer of Love Days and 40 plus years of performing. The current band boasts the longest continuous lineup of 10 years with 4 of the 6 members going back 30-40 years! David LaFlamme on violin and vocals, Linda LaFlamme vocals, original drummer Val Fuentes, 30 year veteran Toby Gray on bass, 10 year veterans Rob Espinosa on guitar and Gary Thomas on keyboards. Their songs try to speak to everyone, mixing a variety of genres with extended musical improvisations that evoke a sense of adventure and exploration.
